Teacher Education in Dadaab

Since 2009, the UBC Faculty of Education has been working with Kenya’s Moi University and the Dadaab refugee camp in northeastern Kenya to develop and implement a teacher education program for secondary school teachers in the Dadaab settlement. Many of the current practicing teachers are without credentials or official teacher training; some of those participating in our program are from outside the camp or are non-refugees but the majority are. Depending on their 2 chosen areas of specialization, teachers ideally should complete our program in 2-3 years, either working towards a secondary diploma from Moi University or an elementary certificate from Kenyatta University. There are currently 5 combinations of specializations to choose from: biology/chemistry, biology/math, english and literature, and history/IRE (Islamic religious education).
